Propecia is a medication used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). It contains a combination of two active ingredients, finasteride and dutasteride.
Propecia is a prescription medication that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness. It is sold by various pharmaceutical companies, including Merck & Co., Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. Generic versions of Propecia and other finasteride medications are also available, although they are not FDA approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Finasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor. It works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can contribute to hair loss. DHT is involved in the development of male pattern baldness. By reducing the levels of DHT, finasteride helps to slow down or even reverse hair loss and promote new hair growth in men with balding areas.
Dutasteride is a 5α-reductase inhibitor.
These two active ingredients work together to inhibit the enzyme 5α-reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can contribute to hair loss.

RefreshFinasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.
Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has said that its application for a ban on finasteride, which is sold in the UK for the treatment of hair loss, has been received by the Department of Health. The MHRA said the application was ‘inappropriate’, and said it would be taking the matter to the General Clinical Commission to review the decision.
The MHRA’s review is expected to include an assessment of whether finasteride was being used to treat male pattern baldness.
The regulator said it was ‘compelling’ the application, and would take the case to the General Clinical Commission to determine whether it was appropriate.
The MHRA has a national regulatory authority review, and an MHRA review will take place in the UK after the case is reviewed.
‘Inappropriate’ applications are one of the risks of approving treatment. In the past, the MHRA has only allowed treatment to be granted after a full clinical assessment. However, the MHRA, like other regulatory bodies, is reviewing any application to make sure it is appropriate.
‘Inappropriate’ applications have been found to have been given with an application from a patient who has previously received treatment for hair loss. The patient is now required to provide evidence supporting the application to the MHRA.
The MHRA said the application was ‘compelling’ the MHRA’s decision to allow finasteride. It said the application was ‘inappropriate’ and that it was not effective and therefore was not an appropriate treatment.
‘The application will be reviewed by the MHRA as a whole,’ the MHRA said. ‘If deemed appropriate, the application will be reviewed by the General Clinical Commission and an MHRA review will take place.
‘The application should not be accepted for review and should be withdrawn, and the MHRA should consider whether it is appropriate to continue to review it.
‘The MHRA is working with the Department of Health and Social Care to ensure that finasteride is approved as part of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) portfolio.
‘However, it is recommended that the MHRA will continue to review the application to ensure the MHRA is considering whether finasteride should be continued, or withdrawn.
‘Further information from the MHRA can be found.

New information was added to the original MHRA application to inform the reviewThe MHRA has also issued a reminder to inform the review, and it has taken up the matter to the General Clinical Commission. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency will take the case to the General Clinical Commission with any concerns or questions.
In a letter to the MHRA, the MHRA said: ‘We are aware of the application. However, we are working with the MHRA to address the concerns that are raised. As a result of the application, we are considering the further changes that are proposed to the MHRA and the General Clinical Commission.’
The MHRA said that the application was ‘inappropriate’, and the application was ‘not effective and therefore not an appropriate treatment’.
Information related to the application was added to the original MHRA application to inform the reviewThe application is now based on information in the MHRA’s medical summary, which is currently available online on its website.

Finasteride works by blocking the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is one of the most commonly used hormones in men. DHT is converted into D-III-alpha (androgen) by the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT is responsible for making prostate gland cells in the prostate gland, prostate, and male urethra cells. Finasteride reduces the production of DHT by inhibiting its action.
